The Salt Route

Pampatar was originally called "Mampatare," which means "Salt Village" in the language of the Guaiquerí Indians. The name comes from the salt flats found there.

These salt flats are a pleasantly impressive landscape due to the vivid colors that can be seen at sunrise or sunset. They are located near the Punta Ballena lighthouse.

The route begins at approximately 5:30 a.m. from the facilities of Sal Mampatare, a company dedicated to the sale of mineral salt, where you will be able to appreciate the colors of the first rays of the sun.

The walk continues to the salt flats where you will hear about the extraction process and the types of salt produced, as well as the history of Mampatare. You will be able to interact with those in charge of extracting the salt and see the friendly faces of these hardworking people.

We'll then climb the mountain ridge, which isn't particularly difficult, from where you can see the 16 salt flats, each with its own unique beauty. Before sunrise, you can watch the flamingos take their first flight of the day.

Descending the ridge, we'll head directly to La Punta Beach, where they'll explain how the mountains connect from one end to the other.

The route covers approximately 7 km between the salt flats and the ridge (46 meters above sea level), with an estimated duration of 3 hours.

The tour includes a demonstration of Sal Mampatare products and gifts. This tour is suitable for people of all ages.
